Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Do not make the mistake of thinking that dental insurance is exactly like medical insurance. While both can be used to help pay for treatment in the event of an emergency, dental insurance puts more emphasis on a preventive approach. This is because dentists and insurance companies alike understand that it’s much more cost-effective to prevent a dental issue, rather than treating it after the fact. That said, often your biannual checkups and cleanings will be better covered (and in some cases completely paid for) than restorative care. The idea is that by encouraging you to keep up with regular dental visits to take advantage of your insurance, you’ll be less likely to suffer from more costly oral health issues down the road!

What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?

The following is a typical example of how many dental PPOs are structured:

  • 100% coverage for preventive care, including biannual checkups and X-rays
  • 80% coverage for minor restorative treatments like fillings
  • 50% coverage for major restorative treatments like dental crowns

Keep in mind that most plans don’t include cosmetic dentistry treatments, as those are considered to be elective. Also, remember that there are various plans to choose from, each with varying levels of coverage; that’s why it’s important to have a grasp on the unique benefits offered by your plan.
